Complex Trauma & Fracture Surgery

Complex orthopedic trauma includes high-energy fractures — multi-fragmentary (comminuted) breaks, joint-involving fractures, pelvic and acetabular injuries, and open fractures — often from road accidents, falls from height or sports collisions. These injuries demand an experienced trauma surgeon, precise surgical fixation and organised rehabilitation. At Noida Orthopedic Clinic, Dr. Amit Aggrawal has extensive experience in managing complex fractures from initial emergency care to full functional recovery.

Types of Complex Fractures We Treat

We manage the full spectrum of complex trauma: comminuted fractures (bone broken into multiple pieces), intra-articular fractures that extend into a joint (such as distal femur, tibial plateau, distal radius and ankle fractures), open fractures with skin violation, dislocations with fracture, pelvic and acetabular fractures, and periprosthetic fractures around previous joint replacements.

Surgical Fixation Techniques

Modern trauma surgery uses anatomic reduction and stable fixation — plates and screws, locking plates, intramedullary nails, external fixators and K-wires — chosen per fracture pattern and patient factors. Minimally invasive plate techniques (MIPO) reduce soft-tissue damage and infection risk while promoting faster healing. For joint fractures, precise restoration of the joint surface is critical to prevent post-traumatic arthritis.

Rehabilitation After Trauma Surgery

Recovery is planned from day one — early mobilisation, swelling control, joint movement exercises and staged weight-bearing, followed by muscle strengthening. Timely follow-up X-rays track healing, and physiotherapy is tailored to regain range of motion, strength and confidence so you can return to work and activity as safely and quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a fracture "complex"?

Fractures that are broken into many pieces, involve the joint surface, are open (bone through skin), involve the pelvis, or occur around a previous joint replacement are considered complex and usually require specialised surgical management.

Can complex fractures heal without surgery?

Some fractures heal with casting alone, but complex fractures usually need surgical fixation to restore alignment and joint congruity. Without it, risks include malunion, non-union, stiffness and early arthritis.

How soon after accident should fracture surgery be done?

Timing depends on the fracture type, skin condition and overall patient condition. Some joint fractures are best fixed within days; others require swelling control first. Dr. Amit Aggrawal plans the safest timing for each case.

Will metal plates need removal later?

Usually not — most implants can stay for life. Removal is considered only if implants cause irritation, or in select young patients with specific indications.
